Travel photography is a great way to capture amazing moments from your travels. Travel photography is about immersing yourself in the place and the culture around you. When you are a travel photographer you take photos of the landscapes, people, cultures, and experiences you encounter during your travels.
There are many things you can do to improve your photographs while traveling. These are the 4 best tips I have discovered in my travels:
1. Research and plan
Before you set out on a journey take some time to research where you will be traveling. Look for the most popular locations, and maybe some of the lesser-known locations. Learn about the people and culture.
It is important to look for what sets your destination apart from other places. This is what you want to capture in your photos. So, the more you know the better you will do.
2. Pack light
It is important to pack light. This will save you from a lot of stress. Many places are very dangerous, so remember that it is better to lose some of your equipment than all of it.
Packing light will also allow you to move around a lot easier. When I am traveling this is the camera gear I take with me:
- Nikon 3500 camera
- Nikkor 18-55mm lens
- Nikkor 55-300mm lens (for portraits)
- Extra memory card
- Extra battery
- Moment T-series 18mm phone lens
- Tripod
- Camera levels
3. Golden and blue hours
Take advantage of golden and blue hours. Depending on where you are in the world these can be very short. They also change with the seasons so it is important to research before you leave. Some applications will help you map these hours from wherever you are in the world.
Blue hour happens first in the morning just as the sun is rising as it gets higher it transforms into golden hour. The opposite happens in the evenings as the sun is setting. These hours will help your photos look better and more natural.
4. Candid moments
Look for candid moments. These make excellent photographs that are unlike any other. Look for people doing their daily activities, and capture these moments. Remember to always ask permission first.
Travel photography is amazing and fun. When you practice you will get better and you will see your work improve. Good luck!
